Traveling Instrument Petting Zoo

A representative from the Ashland Symphony Orchestra will give a 30-45 minute presentation and introduce the audience to the different families of instruments in the orchestra. Participants will have an opportunity to play at least one instrument. Presentations are geared to the age of the audience and are appropriate for preschools, elementary schools, home school cooperatives, summer camps, and senior centers.

The Traveling Instrument Petting Zoo is made possible by Mike’s Music Corner and a grant from the Ashland County Community Foundation.

PROGRAM 1

Meet the Instrument Families

Preschool – 2nd grade

Four (4) 20-minute presentations

A representative from the Ashland Symphony Orchestra will visit once a week for four weeks and present one family of instruments at each visit. Each presentation will be approximately 20-25 minutes, however please plan for more time for classes of more than 20 students.

Each presentation will include an overview of an instrument family – strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Students will be given an opportunity to play* an instrument.

Optional: At each of the first three visits, a bag of resources will be provided to be picked up at the next visit. These bags contain books, a poster, and an activity.

PROGRAM 2

Introduction to the Orchestra

2nd grade and up

Adults

One 30-45 minute program

A representative from the Ashland Symphony Orchestra will present a program introducing at least one instrument from each of the instrument families – strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.

Optional: Students/audience members will have the opportunity to play* an instrument. Please allow for more time for classes/groups of more than 20.

PROGRAM 3

Introduction to the Orchestra with Storybook

Never Play Music Right Next to the Zoo by John Lithgow

All ages

One 35-45 minute program

A representative from the Ashland Symphony Orchestra will read from your choice of The Remarkable Farkle McBride or Never Play Music Right Next to the Zoo and demonstrate an instrument from each instrument family – strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.

Optional: Students/audience members will have the opportunity to play* an instrument. Please allow for more time for classes/groups of more than 20.

*Not all instruments demonstrated are available to be played. Some modifications may be necessary for health reasons.
